My dear Sir Frederick,

I was not at the meeting of Council during

which the tunnel scheme was discussed.

In the event of such a tunnel being under-

-taken it would be advisable to insist on the provision of

means for closing the southern entrance, say by iron gates cover-

-ed by the fire of a stone blockhouse; with these conditions the tunnel would be a help and not a danger to the defence.
